Q. What type of documents should I prepare for my pet(s) to enter into China?
A. No matter which country the pets are coming from, the following two documents are always required:
(1) Rabies vaccination certificate showing the shot given more than 30 days and less than 1 year before travel.
(2) Official health certificate issued and endorsed by the government authority dated less than 14 days before travel.
Q. How many pets can be imported at one time?
A. There is one-passport-one-pet policy applied to pet importation into China. Independent k kid’s passport is also acceptable.
Q. What is the difference between Excess Baggage and Air Cargo?
A. Excess Baggage (or accompanied luggage)--the pet must be checked in at the counter and traveling on the same flight. The airline will give the passenger a baggage ticket to retrieve the dog at destination airport from the baggage claim. The pet may be or may not be allowed to stay inside the main cabin depending on the cage size/pet weight and is up to the airline policy. Always check with your flying airline to see if they allow pets to travel as excess baggage before arranging for your flight.
Air cargo (or manifest cargo)--the pet may be or may not be checked in at the counter, and maybe or may not be traveling on the same flight. It is very possible that a pet is checked in at the counter and flying on the same flight but it is air cargo not excess baggage. No matter how the dog is checked in, and whether the dog is on the same flight or not, the airline must issue an Air Waybill as their receipt for shipping the pet. And at destination, the pet must be unloaded to the cargo warehouse waiting for being cleared through customs.
Q. Is quarantine required in Shanghai?
A. Yes, 7 days mandatory quarantine at the government quarantine station and 23 days home quarantine.
Q. What type of documents/information should I send to Jialiang before the pet’s arrival?
A. 1) Copy of official health certificate (dated less than 14 days of arrival)
2) Copy of Rabies vaccination certificate/record
3) Copy of owner’s passport showing clear picture
4) Address and phone number in Shanghai for pet delivery
5) Confirmed arrival date and flight details
